FOUR SUPREME
COURT JUDGES SWORN IN
President Kufuor administered the Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy to
them, while the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Mrs. Justice Georgina Wood,
administered the Judicial Oath on behalf of the President, after which
the President presented them with their Instruments of Office.

President Kufuor advised them to go beyond their status
as judges and conduct themselves as statesmen who would balance the interest
of the state against that of the individual. He told them that the oaths
they had implied that they would uphold the integrity of Ghana, and that
in so doing, they would come face to face with politics which would require
them to go beyond their status as lawyers and conduct themselves as statesmen
and women.
He said the challenge to the new judges was for them to
show that they really deserved their new statues. He reminded that Ghana
was still a young nation with fledgling institutions which should be nurtured.
It was therefore important for the judges to have foresight and discerning
qualities to uphold the balance between contending interests so that they
would not crash the institutions of state and the state itself.
Responding on behalf
of the judges, Ms. Justice Owusu expressed appreciation to the President,
Parliament, the Council of State and the Judicial Council for the various
roles they had played in the appointment process. She pledged that the
judges would work conscientiously to justify the confidence reposed in
them, always mindful of mother Ghana. |
