This was made known when a seven-member delegation from the Institution paid a courtesy call on the
Hon. Lady Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo at the Conference Room of the Administration
Block of the Judicial Service in Accra.

The President of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Alhaji Dauda Sulemana Mahama, bemoaned the
rate at which the values of properties are either being increased or reduced in court, because they are
not done by professional valuers.
According to him, the absence of a legal requirement for certified valuation opinion had created room
for arbitrariness in the valuation of properties for probate purposes.

The President of the GhIS therefore noted that as “the only recognized professional surveying body
in Ghana, responsible for training and regulating professional members and firms in Ghana, GhIS
considers it a duty to ensure that proper valuation is done to aid the courts”.
He said the Institution is willing to work with the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) to provide training
for Judges on Land Documentation, Mapping and Valuation.
The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, welcomed the proposals put forth by the
GhIS and thanked its leadership for the initiative.
She also expressed the Judicial Service’s willingness to partner GhIS to “sanitize the system”.

The Chief Justice further requested the delegation to submit the list of all Certified Surveyors to
her Office, a copy of their Rules on Arbitration and a list of Certified Arbitrators.
‘I intend to ensure that integrity is maintained in the system, and we will liaise with you to have
a Joint Taskforce to look at all the issues” she intimated.
